Affiliations, Aliens & Other Profitable Pursuits (Claimings #3) by Lyn Gala (5 Stars)

Another adventure in the interesting lives of Liam and Ondry.

I always enjoy the discussions between Liam and Ondry and the Grandmothers. The delicate choice of words and the thought that must go into each conversation is fascinating. It would be exhausting to live like this with every single conversation, but there are definitely advantages to being more careful with our choice of words.

Liam and Ondry are traveling on a ship as part of Ondry’s personal mission to find a cure for Liam’s short life as a human. Ondry is convinced that there is a genetic answer to this problem. It was nice seeing how well these two continue to work and live together. They are a perfect match and it shows in all of their interactions. I think my favorite new part of their relationship was Ondry discovering the delight of kissing.

The Grandmothers on the ship haven’t recognized Ondry with the rank of tuk even though the Grandmothers on his planet have already given him that designation. As Ondry works to prove himself, Liam is dealing with his own issues. Liam meets up with some of his former comrades and learns what has happened to them since he left. One of them is concerned that Liam is not in a healthy relationship. It was sweet watching Ondry try to help Liam deal with his emotions.

This is part of an amazing series and should definitely be read in order.

I adore this unique series with its sweet romance and a love for the nuances of communication.

Where There’s Fire (Panopolis #2) by Cari Z. (4 Stars)

Our super villains continue their adventures in this second and equally enjoyable story set in Panopolis.

Ed and Raul, the Mad Bombardier, are happy and in love, but their lives aren’t easy. Ed escaped prison with a new power – the ability to make somebody experience Ed’s emotions. This allows him to bring somebody to tears or experience extreme fear. Unfortunately, using the powers gives him horrible migraines. Raul is trying to teach Ed as much as possible about being a villain, but before he finishes his training, Raul is kidnapped. Now Ed has to do a special project for the evil Maggot in order to keep Raul from being killed.

I really like these characters and adore Ed. He’s a likable guy with a great voice for telling this story. The romance and relationship were lighter than I would have liked, but the action and Edward’s voice kept it interesting. The ending was solid, but it also left the door open for additional adventures which I will definitely read.

As in the last story, SuperTruther, the blogger, introduces the chapters with an interesting view on the world. I love the way this plot device was used to give us more background on current events in this world.

I really enjoyed this fun, action-packed adventure with my favorite villains from Panopolis.

Where There’s Smoke (Panopolis #1) by Cari Z. (4 Stars)

Very enjoyable story with super heroes, villains, corruption and an interesting narrator.

Edward Dinges moved to Panapolis to find purpose in his life. Until that happens, he works at the local bank and tries to make the most of his days. Raul Tremblay, aka “The Mad Bombardier”, has worked with explosives since he was a small child. Raul would have been killed while robbing the bank if Edward hadn’t helped him out. This is how they begin their relationship, but they have an uphill battle to keep it from coming to an early demise.

Edward was a sweet guy, and although he was bothered by Raul’s status as a villain, he also felt that Raul was a good guy deep down. Raul made sure nobody ever got hurt during his escapades. Raul spent his days robbing banks and hiring himself out to other villains to handle the explosives. Although I felt like I got to know the characters based on their actions, I would have liked more time with Edward and Raul actually talking to each other instead of just being told about it.

I really enjoyed the way every chapter opened with a broadcast by SuperTruther, the person who informed the city about the corruption taking place between the government and corporations.

A fun story and introduction into an interesting world with plenty of opportunity for a great series. I’m really looking forward to the next book, Where There’s Fire.

Magpie (Avian Shifters #2) by Kim Dare (5 Stars)

Kane doesn’t realize how desperately he needs somebody to care for him. Fortunately, Everet is the perfect raven for the job. Kane, a magpie, is addicted to stealing and shooting up with the drug quicksilver. Everet rescues him from a serious beating, and then helps him deal with withdrawal. It broke my heart to watch them go through this together.

Kane is the definition of a brat, and he’s been using his good looks and sex appeal his entire life to get what he wants. None of it works on Everet although it was fun to watch Kane constantly try. Everet is in charge of security, and he also likes to be in charge in his relationship. Everet likes the real Kane, and he’s determined to make sure Kane starts to finally like and respect himself. It was a long road, with several missteps, but Everet had the patience to stand true to his convictions. Watching these two together was beautiful. They truly complemented each other in their needs and capabilities. I enjoyed seeing Ori and Raynard from Duck! and felt that their presence added to the story.
