Magpie (Avian Shifters #2) by Kim Dare (5 Stars)

Kane doesn’t realize how desperately he needs somebody to care for him. Fortunately, Everet is the perfect raven for the job. Kane, a magpie, is addicted to stealing and shooting up with the drug quicksilver. Everet rescues him from a serious beating, and then helps him deal with withdrawal. It broke my heart to watch them go through this together.

Kane is the definition of a brat, and he’s been using his good looks and sex appeal his entire life to get what he wants. None of it works on Everet although it was fun to watch Kane constantly try. Everet is in charge of security, and he also likes to be in charge in his relationship. Everet likes the real Kane, and he’s determined to make sure Kane starts to finally like and respect himself. It was a long road, with several missteps, but Everet had the patience to stand true to his convictions. Watching these two together was beautiful. They truly complemented each other in their needs and capabilities. I enjoyed seeing Ori and Raynard from Duck! and felt that their presence added to the story.

The Price (Las Vegas Escorts#1) by Andrew Grey (5 Stars)

A beautiful and engaging romance built on love and respect.

Grant is a school teacher, and he’s working over the summer to pay off his sister’s debt. Between working and helping to take care of his Dad, he doesn’t have much of a personal life. When a blind date goes bad, Hunter comes to his rescue. Hunter Wolfe is a highly paid escort who provides a variety of personal services, including sex. Hunter and Grant have a few things in common including having a rough childhood and helping each other out at the high school they attended together. Hunter takes Grant out to dinner to thank him for his past help, but both of them are surprised at the connection they feel for one another. The biggest question is if the two of them can make it work with Hunter’s career.

Hunter is extremely handsome and sexy, and he knows it. While this arrogance might normally be annoying, in this case it was adorable because he uses his good looks and charm to help other people. He takes his role as an escort very seriously, and when he’s with a client, he gives them his undivided focus. Anybody who has ever been on the receiving end of that kind of attention knows what a wonderful feeling it can be. He always works hard to give his clients an experience they won’t forget, which has made him extremely popular and wealthy. Grant is a sweet person who does a wonderful job teaching students. He tries hard to find the best way to make each student excited about learning, and he’s successful at it.

I really enjoyed watching these two get to know each other. I loved Hunter and Grant, and I really wanted them to find the happiness that they deserved. I adored how Grant was so determined to take care of Hunter knowing that Hunter always took care of everybody else. I also enjoyed the time they spent in the bedroom. Their feelings for each other came through in every action, making it even sexier. Doses of realism kept me wondering how they would resolve the biggest issue they needed to deal with – convincing Hunter he deserved love and happiness. Interactions with friends and family helped us understand the characters better. It also created some excitement for what I can only hope will be the next book in the series. I read this book in one sitting and loved every minute of it.

This touching romance was such an enjoyable reading experience with unique and richly developed characters.

Axel’s Pup (Werewolves & Dragons #1) By Kim Dare (5 Stars)

5 Stars! Perfect from beginning to end, this was an extremely engaging and beautiful love story that I found impossible to put down.

Axel Carmichael owns a pub and leads a motorcycle gang. The gang is his family, and he’s generally a happy person. He’s also an amazing Dom, and he’s fortunate enough to find the perfect sub in Bayden. Bayden Wolf is completely focused on the single goal of making enough money to take care of his mom and grandfather. The fastest way to make the money he needs is by winning fights and getting paid for sex. As a wolf shifter, he heals quickly from physical damage, but the psychological damage these activities has caused is a different story. Fortunately, the love and support of Axel will eventually help him heal.

The focus of the story is on Axel trying to help Bayden heal and learn to respect himself. I enjoyed the dialogue between Axel and Bayden and felt it really helped to make the characters and their relationship believable. The aspects related to the wolf shifter world were extremely interesting. There was rampant discrimination against the wolf shifters and it was heart-breaking reading about how it affected their lives. The same type of discrimination continues to take place in the real world making it even harder to read about. Seeing the direct impact it had on Bayden’s life, including his battered-down emotional outlook, was very challenging. Axel recognized this and spent the necessary time trying to truly understand the world Bayden lived in. It was just one of the many ways that Axel showed his love for Bayden. Bayden thought it was an acceptable part of his life to fight and have sex for money as long as he felt he was controlling the situation. It was very hard to watch Bayden endure, among other things, sadistic knife play without the use of a safe word. Watching Bayden heal under Axel’s guidance was touching. Bayden’s desire to truly and completely submit to Axel was the best gift he could give Axel.

The majority of the story was spent in Axel’s pub but they also spent time riding their bikes and visiting Bayden’s family. The interactions with the other friends and family helped to further develop the world and the characters.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the steamy sex scenes between these two people who cared about each other so much. There was bondage, spanking, caning, and some breath play. Although Bayden performed sexual acts with other people at the beginning of the story, it was only related to his need to earn money.

You have to wonder when you read a story of this length if there is going to be unnecessary filler, endless narrative and wasted pages. You definitely won’t find that in Axel’s Pup. No doubt, it’s a hefty book, but I was so consumed by the story that the pages flew by. Every word and scene contributed to the building of the relationship and the deeper understanding of the characters. It will be in my top reads for 2015! I’m thrilled that this is the beginning of a series which means I might get a chance to see these two characters again.

I highly recommend this Dom/sub love story with its richly developed characters and interesting shifter world.
