How to Train Your Dom in Five Easy Steps by Josephine Myles (5 Stars)

Easy might be an exaggeration, but it was certainly worth the effort.

Jeff White is 100% straight and intends to stay that way. He has finally admitted that he’s a sadist, but he’s having a very hard time finding a new lover after the breakup of his 15-year relationship. Eddie Powell is a huge pain-slut who is having a very hard time finding the right man. When Jeff decides that he needs some training to be a good Dom, a mutual friend connects the two of them. The question is, what will happen after the training is over?

Jeff’s fear of doing anything at all that might be considered gay is palpable. On the outside, he is extremely rude and has no idea how to filter anything before speaking. However, on the inside, he is actually a very considerate and thoughtful person. Fortunately, Eddie catches on to this right away and sees the potential of a relationship with Jeff. Eddie is a cheeky, adorable sweetheart who runs his own graphic design business. These two were a perfect fit when having scenes together.

There is a lot of serious play taking place in this story including several instruments of pain, like an electro-therapy wand and a tawse, along with significant humiliation. Eddie obviously enjoyed everything, and it came through loud and clear. On the other hand, Jeff was an absolute baby when it came to receiving any pain at all, but he loved dishing it out.

In addition to the scenes, these two had quite a bit in common, and it was great to see them develop their relationship. I liked watching Jeff constantly questioning whether each act he performed would be considered gay or not, until he finally accepted the truth about himself.

A fabulous trip into the minds of a sadist and a masochist who were fortunate enough to find each other.

The Subs Club (The Subs Club #1) by J.A. Rock (4 Stars)

Five friends. One tragic death. Can the four friends find a way forward and begin to heal?

Dave and his three friends try to work through their grief after losing one of their best friends during a scene at a local BDSM club. It’s been over a year, and the pain is still fresh. Dave still hasn’t come to terms with what has happened and is extremely upset that the Dom responsible was found innocent in court. He tries to work through his issues by spending time with his friends and trying to find other outlets for his grief. He turns to another Dave, the “Disciplinarian”, for guidance. He ends up with more than he bargained for in a good way.

The Disciplinarian is trying his best to give Dave what he needs, including spankings, an enema, a caning, and the hardest thing for Dave, learning to be silent. While Dave and the Disciplinarian develop their relationship, Dave is also busy starting a website called The Subs Club. It’s meant to be an outlet for other subs to share reviews on Doms in the hopes that nobody else has to die at the hands of somebody who doesn’t know what they’re doing.  I liked the concept of this website, the drama that surrounded it, and the related consequences.

This was only told from Dave’s point of view, and I never felt like I really got to know the Disciplinarian very well. The two seemed to play well together, but it was the relationship side that was a bit too light for my tastes. Romance aside, Dave’s voice was strong and interesting. Without a doubt, this author consistently writes very real and unique characters. We spent quite a bit of time during the story with the other three intriguing characters which set us up for the next several books in the series.

Finding discipline, no matter the source, can sometimes make all of the difference in the world.

More Than Just a Good Book by Sloan Parker (5 Stars)

Two older college students finally find the perfect boyfriend in each other, but first they have to work through some issues to get their happy ending.

Mark is looking forward to graduating from college and moving as far away as he can due to his poor relationship with his family. Scott will be starting graduate school soon, but doesn’t want to move too far away from his Dad. This is one of the major barriers that they need to get past if they want to stay together. They also have to deal with bullies, Mark’s controlling personality, and other school related items.

I liked Scott and Mark and thought they worked well together as a couple. They both love to read, and seemed to enjoy spending time together. Scott was a loner who lived in his world of books, but he didn’t actually come across as lonely. Mark has a pretty vibrant personality, and he was also very interested in taking care of people. There were a few times that they acted a bit immature, but they were quick to admit they were wrong and move forward. Considering neither of them had really been in a good relationship in the past, this made the story feel much more realistic.

The sex was smoking hot and plentiful, but it didn’t overwhelm the story. They were both into light bondage and spanking, making the story pretty erotic. Mark is somewhat insecure with his need to dominate another man, and it was interesting to watch him work through his desires. Mark is controlling outside of the bedroom, too, which Scott didn’t seem to mind. However, at the same time, Scott didn’t let Mark get away with anything he didn’t want him to.

I also loved Scott’s dad, and the strong relationship that they had. He played a pivotal role in the story in a good way. The epilogue was perfect, and their gifts to each other were so romantic.

Enjoyable, erotic story about older college students working through life’s challenges together.

Duck (Avian Shifters #1) by Kim Dare (5 Stars)

Two shifters fall in love based on an incorrect assumption. Can their love survive when the truth comes out?

Ori is a fledgling looking forward to his full transformation into a duck. He’s living and working with a group of other avian shifters, but the other shifters are physically and emotionally abusing him. Fortunately, most of the abuse is described during flashbacks with minimal detail.

Raynard recently lost his uncle and is now responsible for taking over all of his business dealings. He’s beyond angry at Ori’s treatment, and decides to take Ori in as his own servant. They quickly settle into a beautiful, loving relationship as Raynard discovers Ori is the perfect submissive for him. Ori would do anything for Raynard and the feelings are mutual. These two take care of each other in so many ways. Ori creates a true home for Raynard, while Raynard protects Ori and builds his self-confidence.

As certain events unfold, Raynard makes a sacrifice out of his pure love for Ori. Although my heart was breaking, and tears were streaming down my face, I was also touched by their deep love for each other. As always, the author delivers on her promise of a happy ending.
