Merry Gentlemen by Josephine Myles (3 Stars)

Riley was a fun character with a quick wit, and the story is basically focused around him figuring out what he really wants out of life. I really didn’t get to know Stan at all, and I didn’t understand their relationship. There was very little dialogue between them, and we really didn’t see them spend any time together. We were just told about moments of time in their past, but it still didn’t paint a picture of a relationship.  The bulk of this story wasn’t very happy, but instead was a little sad with too much angst for my tastes.

The Touch of Hope by Brandon Shire (4 Stars)

Heart wrenching look at life on the street for two young men. The author brought to life the details of being homeless. Although depressing, there was a bit of hope as they started to find ways to get back on their feet. While I enjoyed the author’s voice, I struggled a little with this story. I felt it should have been longer or focused on fewer issues.  I wanted to know more about both of the characters, their backgrounds, and how they planned on moving forward together. I could easily see this turned into a full novel.  Includes sex with a minor and drug use.

Speechless by Kim Fielding (5 Stars)

Simply brilliant! Although Drew lost his ability to speak after a car accident, he and Travis communicated extremely well together. I really felt like I got to know both of these characters in a meaningful way. The major angst in the story was realistic, and the wonderful ending made me well up with tears.

The Gig is a free short epilogue, available at Dreamspinner Press, which was also excellent!
