Point of No Return (Turning Point #1) (4 Stars)

How long can you mix a dangerous career with a hidden love affair?

Matthew Elliot is one of the Fab Four, a group of top notch detectives working in the narcotics division in Los Angeles. They have been shutting down drug rings and risking their lives to do it. He’s also deep in the closet, and afraid that if he publicly declares he’s gay, he might lose his friends and job. His sexy new boxing coach, Kira Takeo Franco, is also in the closet, but their attraction is mutual.

I really enjoyed this heavy relationship story with romance and police drama. The majority of it was pretty sweet, but it did get a bit violent toward the end. Most of the sex takes place off the page, but it was still sexy in its own way. Matthew was a strong detective who really loved his job. Kira was such a sweet guy who always had a smile. These two were meant to be together, and it was fun watching them sparring at the club or sharing romantic evenings together.

There was a little mystery surrounding the drug bust that took place which gave us a chance to spend time with Matthew’s co-workers. Matthew’s best friend and partner, Mitch, plays a heavy role in the story. Unfortunately, Matthew has never told Mitch he’s gay. I could feel the angst this was causing Matthew, and I wanted to beg him to say something. Kira’s parents were a nice touch to the story, especially since Matthew didn’t have any family left. The violence at the end detracted from the story for me since it was a bit extreme.

I really enjoyed the author’s riveting writing style and this very charming romantic suspense.

Hell & Highwater (THIRDS #1) By Charlie Cochet (5 Stars)

An excellent action-based paranormal police story with a side of romance. Dex was amusing but also compassionate as the newest member of the THIRDS. Sloane was tough as nails and a good leader. The internal struggle Sloane faced, having lost his previous partner and lover, seemed realistic, and the tension between him and Dex made sense. Sloane truly loved his former partner and wasn’t ready to move on. He also felt something strong for Dex who, fortunately, was very supportive of the grieving process that Sloane was going through.

I liked the light humor throughout the book mixed in with suspenseful action scenes. The side characters were also really interesting including all of the other officers and Dex’s family.

This is the first in the series with an HFN on both the romance and overall arc. However, I wasn’t frustrated with the ending, and it didn’t feel like a major cliff-hanger. I’m looking forward to the next story to see how the relationship between Dex and Sloane moves forward, to see if any of the other characters get a story of their own, and too see how the plot moves forward on the killer.

The Boyfriend Mandate (The Boyfriend Chronicles #2) by River Jaymes (3 Stars)

Although I loved the first story, this one didn’t work for me on several levels. I spent the majority of the story disliking Memphis because of how he left Tyler. There were two main reasons why he left, and while the second one made the most sense, it was told too late in the story. The lack of communication between Memphis and Tyler was exhausting. The few times they did open up and talk, it would only last a few sentences before the scene faded to black. I just wasn’t convinced that these two should get back together. The other irritant was the extensive use of the word “dryly” to the point of distraction.  I’m still hopeful about the next story with Noah and Ky.

The Merchant of Death (Playing the Fool #2) by Lisa Henry and J.A. Rock (5 Stars)

Henry and Mac become entangled in mystery and murder, but that’s not as dangerous as their romance.

This is the second story in the series, and the first one, The Two Gentlemen of Altona, definitely needs to be read first. Henry and Mac pick the action right back up from the first story, and we get to learn so much more about both of them. Henry had a traumatic childhood with his drug-addicted mother. The tragedy that befell his sister is what drives him to keep conning. Mac finds himself under investigation by the Office of Professional Responsibility. We learn more about his real friends and his family life. Henry and Mac clicked on such a base level, and I truly believed that they were meant to be together. I enjoyed watching them spend more time together.

The plot focused on sinister activities taking place at a local care home. Henry infiltrates the home dressed as a woman and finds himself in the middle of the nightmare and in desperate need of Mac’s help. Seeing Henry dressed as a woman worked for both Mac and Henry and certainly lead to some interesting sex scenes.

Although Henry and Mac make some progress on their relationship, we aren’t anywhere close to seeing a happy ending. However, there’s definitely a light at the end of the tunnel.

An exciting continuation of the adventures of Henry and Mac.
